- The Department of Economics was originally founded under Yangon University in 1924. In 1964, it was established as a separate institution known as the Yangon Institute of Economics, which commemorated its centennial anniversary in 2024.
- During the preparatory meetings for the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Yangon Institute of Economics, alumini holding economics degrees came together and decided to establish the “Myanmar Economics Association”.
